Luffy and Loki find a way through Imu’s defense, but Usopp lands the chapter’s sharpest argument first. Everyone has a theory about who Luffy is supposed to become. His oldest crewmates still know the person making the choice.
What happened
The Gokoku Sovereignty that closed chapter 1191 sends Imu flying without ending the fight. Luffy and Loki pursue. Loki brings Ragnir down, while Luffy answers the incoming Omen attacks with the sprawling, rubbery barrage of Dawn Kraken Gatling.
Imu has an answer to that pressure. The Shield of Emptiness, Tohu va-Vohu, stops Luffy’s fists painfully enough to make the obstacle unmistakable. Throwing more punches at the same barrier is not getting him through. Imu follows with a counterattack that sends Luffy crashing down.
Gaban again calls for retreat. From his position, the calculation is grim: Luffy is wounded, their enemy remains dangerous, and continuing to fight could throw away the future everyone is hoping for.
Then Usopp speaks from Hajrudin’s shoulder. He recalls the giants who have helped the crew: Dorry and Brogy, Oimo and Kashii, and Hajrudin’s own companions. These are friendships with a history. Asking Luffy to abandon Elbaph now means asking him to abandon people who have repeatedly stood beside them.
The argument deepens when Luffy’s identity enters it. Usopp refuses to let comparisons with Nika, Joy Boy or Roger dictate his captain’s actions. Other people can believe in Luffy. They cannot turn that belief into ownership of his choices. Gaban’s desire to save him meets a crewmate’s insistence that Luffy must remain free, even when the decision is frightening.
Luffy, meanwhile, finds a different attack. He uses Loki’s hammer swing to launch himself, combining their momentum and lightning in Dawn Thor Bullet. This time the shield breaks, and the blow visibly hurts Imu. The chapter ends with a breakthrough, while leaving the enemy’s next response unresolved.
What it means
Usopp is unusually well placed to make this case. He knows how terrifying the fight is, and he has admired Elbaph’s warriors for years. His courage here includes accepting danger alongside the people whose example helped shape his dream. A speech does not finish that dream, but this one gives it substance.
His defense of Luffy matters especially after chapter 1044 revealed the Nika fruit. That revelation supplied a mythic explanation for Luffy’s power. It did not give every believer permission to decide his life. Usopp insists that the friend he has traveled with remains the starting point for understanding him.
Gaban’s warning still has force. Caring about Luffy’s freedom does not make his wounds disappear, and knowing his character does not guarantee he can win. The tension works because both sides want something precious protected: Gaban fears losing a future; Usopp fears sacrificing the person to preserve it.
The action answers a narrower question than the speech. Once the barrage fails, Luffy uses Loki’s swing to change the attack rather than repeating it. Breaking the shield proves this combination worked. It does not reveal which ingredient—timing, force, lightning or their interaction—made the difference. Artur’s analysis tracks the change of attacks without supplying a complete defensive rule for Imu.
Theories after chapter 1192
Confirmed: Imu’s shield can be broken. Dawn Thor Bullet succeeds where the earlier barrage failed. This establishes a breach in that defense, without establishing that Luffy can now defeat Imu alone or repeat the result indefinitely.
Usopp states a position; he does not explain Nika’s mechanics. His defense of Luffy’s choices is explicit. It leaves unanswered whether the fruit has any independent influence and how ancient expectations will fit Luffy’s eventual decisions.
Still speculation: Imu’s condition will decide the battle. Signs of strain invite questions about endurance and the limits of this confrontation. The chapter does not provide a reliable countdown or prove that waiting alone will defeat Imu.
Unconfirmed: Usopp has a new Haki technique. His sudden presence and Gaban’s surprise encourage discussion about how he reached the scene. They do not by themselves confirm a newly named ability or mastery of concealment. His clearest achievement here is speaking for his captain when the pressure to retreat is greatest.
Spoilers through chapter 1192.
