Zou’s biggest shock is a sentence. A country lies in ruins, its rulers have lost limbs, and the Straw Hats are bracing for a confrontation with the samurai who brought this disaster to its doorstep. Then the minks bow: Raizo is safe. In one turn, the island that seemed to be another casualty of the Emperors becomes the place where Luffy’s journey gains a destination he can actually chart.
The set-up: a reunion on a wounded island
The Zou arc spans chapters 802–824, between Dressrosa and Whole Cake Island. Luffy’s group arrives with Law, Kin’emon and Kanjuro to reunite with the Straw Hats who sailed ahead. Their destination is the Mokomo Dukedom, a country carried across the sea on the back of the enormous elephant Zunesha.
It is a glorious setting for an adventure: a climb into the clouds, a whale-shaped tree, and an entire civilization living above the ocean. But the ruined buildings immediately change the mood. Something terrible happened before Luffy arrived. Nami, Chopper, Brook and Sanji have already played their part in saving the inhabitants—and Sanji is now missing.
That timing gives Zou its unusual structure. We explore the aftermath first, then learn how it happened. The important questions concern what the survivors endured, what Sanji agreed to, and why nobody wants the samurai anywhere near the minks.
What happened: Jack’s siege and the Straw Hats’ rescue
Jack came to Zou demanding Raizo, a ninja from Wano. The minks denied knowing his whereabouts. Their two rulers, Inuarashi and Nekomamushi, maintained separate day and night watches, allowing their forces to rotate while Jack kept fighting.
Chapter 810 establishes the cost: five days and nights of resistance, followed by Jack’s use of Caesar Clown’s poison gas. The minks could hold their ground in battle, but the gas incapacitated them. Jack’s forces tortured the survivors, taking Inuarashi’s left leg and Nekomamushi’s left arm. Still, nobody surrendered Raizo.
Jack then departed to attempt Doflamingo’s rescue, leaving subordinates behind. Sanji’s group arrived in the aftermath. In chapter 811, they forced Caesar to clear the gas while Chopper organized treatment and the others helped save the wounded. Their welcome on Zou was earned through urgent, practical work.
This is one of the arc’s best choices. Chopper’s medical knowledge and Nami’s readiness to help a stranger matter as much as anyone’s attack power. The rescue also establishes a debt of friendship before Luffy knows how deeply the minks are connected to his own companions.
Sanji’s departure turns the reunion into a rescue mission
The Big Mom Pirates bring the second crisis. Pekoms returns to his homeland with Bege and discovers that the Straw Hats saved his people. Gratitude changes his intentions; Bege shoots him and proceeds with the mission anyway.
Chapter 812 reveals the invitation: Sanji, the third son of the Vinsmoke family, is expected to marry Charlotte Pudding. Suddenly his past has enough political weight to reach across the New World and pull him away from the Sunny.
In chapter 813, Sanji rejects the arrangement but faces threats against his companions and a private message from Vito whose contents remain unrevealed here. He gets Nami, Chopper and Brook out of Bege’s fortress body, uses Caesar as leverage, and leaves with a note promising to return.
The smile and casual wording cannot make that a free choice. Sanji is trying to contain the danger by treating it as a personal problem. Luffy’s answer is to go after him. The crew has an approaching conflict with Kaido, but its cook is not an acceptable sacrifice to keep that plan tidy.
That decision launches the next adventure. Our Whole Cake Island recap follows what happens when the retrieval team reaches Big Mom’s territory.
The key moment: “Raizo is safe”
By chapter 816, the Straw Hats believe the samurai’s arrival could provoke the devastated minks. They try desperately to keep the groups apart. Oda has supplied every reason to expect anger: the invaders demanded a samurai, the inhabitants denied having him, and the country suffered for it.
Then Kin’emon introduces himself as a Kozuki retainer. The minks kneel and reveal that Raizo has been protected all along.
The revelation changes the meaning of every denial we heard. Their answers to Jack were a collective promise kept under torture. Nobody broke it—not a ruler, a warrior or an ordinary citizen. Even the bitter feud between Inuarashi and Nekomamushi could not divide them over that obligation.
What makes the scene land is how much we already understand about the damage. We have seen the missing limbs and the wreckage before discovering the choice behind them. The minks’ loyalty gives that suffering a meaning they chose, without making Jack’s cruelty any less monstrous.
Chapter 817 then brings us to Raizo himself and reveals Momonosuke’s true position. Kin’emon has been posing as his father; Momonosuke is Oden’s son and heir. The minks’ ties to Wano are personal, historical and still alive.
The Road Poneglyph makes the final island reachable
Inside the Whale Tree stands a red Poneglyph. In chapter 818, Robin translates it, and the rulers explain that four Road Poneglyphs identify four locations whose intersecting lines reveal Laugh Tale’s position.
One is on Zou. Big Mom and Kaido each possess another. The fourth’s whereabouts are unknown at this point in the story. Copies of the inscriptions are enough; the crew does not need to haul the enormous stones aboard.
That is a remarkable change in the treasure hunt. The Emperors now stand between Luffy and specific information he needs. Navigation, translation and intelligence become essential parts of reaching his goal. Chapter 820 also clarifies that following the Log Pose to its endpoint does not, by itself, deliver a crew to Laugh Tale.
The stones connect directly to Momonosuke’s family. The Kozuki crafted the Poneglyphs, and Oden could read their script, but died before passing that knowledge to his son. His voyage with Roger connects Wano’s tragedy to the final island.
Nekomamushi’s warning to Robin makes the danger immediate: powerful people will come for someone who can read the stones. Her confidence in her crewmates is the answer. Beside the minks’ protection of Raizo, it gives the arc another expression of the same faith—having people who will stand between you and overwhelming force.
Momonosuke speaks, and Zunesha answers
Luffy insists in chapter 819 that Momonosuke ask for help himself. The boy finally states his wish to defeat Kaido and protect his retainers, and Luffy accepts. The Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance turns several overlapping grievances into a shared campaign.
Momonosuke’s next decision saves everyone. Jack returns and attacks Zunesha directly. In chapter 821, both Luffy and Momonosuke hear the elephant’s voice, but Momonosuke can communicate with it and give the permission it needs to fight back.
Zunesha explains that an old crime left it condemned to walk, unable to act freely. Momonosuke orders it to retaliate, and a single swing of its trunk destroys Jack’s fleet. The island itself has been a participant in the story all along.
The distinction matters: hearing the voice and issuing a command are different abilities in this scene. Zou shows what Momonosuke can do while leaving the deeper explanation unresolved. The elephant’s crime and the source of that authority remain mysteries at the arc’s end.
What Zou sets up—and why it matters
Chapter 822 divides the alliance into four groups: Sanji’s retrieval team, the advance party heading to Wano, Nekomamushi’s search for Marco, and Momonosuke staying with Inuarashi to learn more from Zunesha. Carrot slips aboard the Sunny, while Pedro joins the rescue mission openly.
The closing chapters widen the danger again. News arrives of Baltigo’s destruction, Kaido’s anger makes the consequences of Dressrosa explicit, and chapter 824 shows Jack alive underwater. Zunesha won the immediate confrontation; the threat behind Jack still exists.
Zou accomplishes all this without a conventional Luffy-versus-villain finale. Its defining victories belong to people keeping faith: the minks refusing to betray Raizo, the Straw Hats healing strangers, Robin trusting her crew, and Momonosuke finding the courage to ask and command.
Those relationships are also what unlock the next stage of the voyage. The crew gains access to a guarded stone, allies for Wano and companions for Sanji’s rescue. Our Wano recap follows the eventual campaign, but its foundation is here, in a ruined country that kept its promise.
The road to Laugh Tale becomes clearer on Zou because the Straw Hats meet people willing to trust them with it. That is a treasure-hunt breakthrough worth cheering for.
Spoilers through chapter 824.
