Killingham chooses the wrong nightmare to weaponize. The Ivankov he pulls from Sanji’s mind is frightening because the advice is difficult to dismiss: winning a fight does not excuse letting an opponent ruin your body. Chapter 1196 makes Sanji confront that lesson while there are still children depending on him.

What happened

After the injuries sustained in chapter 1195, Sanji keeps fighting Killingham. The Knight attacks his confidence and his lack of Supreme King Haki, then puts him to sleep and manifests a nightmare from his mind. It takes Ivankov’s form. Killingham fuses with it, despite not knowing who Ivankov is.

A flashback returns to Sanji’s timeskip training. He wins his thirtieth recipe, but Ivankov is alarmed by his injuries and orders a break. Sanji has been accepting attacks he could avoid. Ivankov connects that poor defense to his disregard for himself and warns that these costly victories will eventually leave him unable to protect others.

In the present, Sanji still resists parts of the argument. Then he considers changing his defense and begins an answer to Ivankov. The nightmare disappears. He reappears above Killingham and declares that he will stop taking the Knight’s attacks. The fight continues beyond the official chapter’s closing page.

What Ivankov’s lesson changes

The flashback starts with something measurable: Sanji wins, but leaves the bout more battered than his opponent. Looking only at the result would hide the problem. He can keep collecting recipes while training himself to accept needless harm.

That makes Ivankov’s intervention more specific than an instruction to believe in himself. Rest. Defend. Stop confusing the ability to endure a hit with a reason to take it. These are decisions Sanji can apply in the next exchange, before the story awards him any new technique.

Killingham’s regeneration makes the lesson urgent. Sanji cannot trade injuries indefinitely with an enemy who keeps recovering. His toughness has allowed him to remain in the fight; protecting that body may be what allows him to finish it. The children need their rescuer standing at the end.

The advice also revisits Whole Cake Island, especially the reunion in chapter 856. Sanji’s attempt to protect everyone by leaving the crew failed to account for what those friends wanted: him back with them. Accepting their affection was progress. Chapter 1196 asks whether he can extend that care to himself when a battle starts going badly.

That is why Ivankov works as this particular nightmare. Sanji cannot answer the criticism simply by saying Germa no longer defines him. He invokes the value his friends have given him while continuing to dismiss his own suffering. The discomfort lies in the distance between knowing he is loved and behaving as though his survival matters.

The ending offers a first action toward closing that distance. It does not show every old wound healed. Sanji is still argumentative, still himself, and now trying a different response. That is enough to make the next exchange interesting.

Theories after chapter 1196

Conqueror’s Haki is plausible, still unconfirmed. Killingham’s taunts and the parallel with Zoro make the setup hard to ignore. Gaban’s assessment adds weight. But the nightmare vanishing and Sanji gaining a higher position do not independently demonstrate a Haki category. Our theory article weighs the case without assigning an awakening date.

The nightmare’s hold can end. Killingham visibly loses the Ivankov manifestation as Sanji changes his response. The chapter does not explain a universal rule for dispelling every nightmare, or prove that each victim can reproduce Sanji’s result.

Killingham’s regeneration remains a separate problem. Better defense keeps Sanji alive to look for an answer. Whether that answer is Conqueror’s Haki, cooperation or another tactic remains open at the cutoff.

Correction, October 30, 2026: The earlier recap called this the first criticism of Sanji’s self-sacrifice. The story had challenged that behavior before; this chapter gives Ivankov’s specific warning and Sanji’s response.

Spoilers through chapter 1196.
